SUMMER is the time for all types of water-based activities, from swimming and surfing to fishing, boating and water-skiing.
The Hunter Region offers many areas where you can enjoy these sports, such as the magnificent beaches of Newcastle, the broad expanse of Lake Macquarie and the dolphin-friendly blue water wonderland of Port Stephens.
You can make your own fun or take advantage of the many cruises available, such as a luncheon excursion on Lake Macquarie or a dolphin-watching outing in the Port Stephens waters.
If you don't want to venture into the water, there are many picturesque vantage points from which to enjoy it, including the busy foreshore of Newcastle Harbour, with its restaurants and markets, and the popular walkway around Lake Macquarie.
For those who feel like travelling further, there are many holiday spots within an easy drive where you can enjoy sun, surf and sand in attractive surroundings.
Among them is the coastal town of Coffs Harbour, famous for its bananas and fishing as well as for its beaches.
The most popular is Park Beach, just north of the CBD, which provides good conditions for surfers, although few protected areas for swimmers. Parts of it are patrolled by the surf lifesaving club.
There is also Jetty Beach near the Marina, Boambee Beach south of Jetty Beach and a number of other beaches just a short drive from town.
For more details ring the Coffs Harbour Visitor Information Centre on 1300369070.
