KIAMA Game Fishing Club's Children's Fishing Competition last weekend had the junior anglers "breaming" with excitement.

Children who took part in the annual tournament in and around Kiama Harbour were treated to an extra surprise with the appearance of world boxing champion Kostya Tszyu.

Tszyu had been out fishing on charter boat Kato, and was happy to have his photo taken with some of the children and sign autographs, including tournament hats that were given as prizes.

Over 45 budding anglers took part in the tournament.

"The tournament was held to introduce fishing to juniors, and added another event for children during the school holidays," Kiama Game Fishing Club president Nicole Smithers said.

"The club did not receive any financial benefit from the day as all proceeds from entries will be given to Camp Quality.

"The committee and volunteers that helped on the day got such a thrill seeing children as young as four and five bring their fish over to be weighed."

All children were supplied with buckets, squidgies and other goodies courtesy of Bunnings, Shimano and NSW Fisheries, which allowed them to bring their fish over in the buckets full of water, and then release them alive back into Kiama Harbour.

The competition winners were: Under six years - Callum Rogers and Ally Brown (tied); Six years to under 11s - Ben Ormsby; 11 years to under 16s - Ryan Brown.

Other sponsors that contributed to the day included Anglers Tackle & Sports, Kiama Aqua Fishing & Pet Supplies, Kiama Cycle & Sports, Scoops on Terralong and Video Ezy.

"Every child that entered the tournament went away with a prize and this wouldn't have been possible without the support of our sponsors," Smithers said.
