GREYHOUND administrator Sean Kennedy has changed camps after resigning from the National Coursing Association board of directors and The Gardens Sports Club to take over as operations manager of the Birmingham Gardens complex. The 40-year-old started the job on Monday at The Gardens to develop new sponsorships and oversee the running of the $7 million complex. Tim Newbold will remain as racing administrator in charge of the racing side of the complex, which has been an outstanding success since being opened in September. Kennedy has spent the past 17 years in Newcastle after moving from Sydney, where he worked on the natural gas project and ran a courier service for the last 13 years. He has been involved in the greyhound industry since 1983 as an owner and at present races Freddy Magic, which is racing in New Zealand, and had former top-class speedsters Casual Millie, Coconut Willie and Pindimar, named after the Port Stephens fishing village where his wife, Kim, grew up. The Kennedy's have three children, sons Liam, 8, Kiernan, 6, and 13-month old Keely, and live at Charlestown. Kim works as a clinical nurse at John Hunter Hospital. "It is a change of career but is certainly something I have had at the back of my mind for a long time," Kennedy said. "I plan to have a hands-on approach and know the industry very well and I certainly have a wonderful complex to work with at The Gardens. "The experience I have had being on the NCA Board for a couple of years and being on The Gardens Sports Club board will certainly help me settle in." Newbold said public response to The Gardens complex had been outstanding. Tonight's meeting is the last Wednesday fixture until February, but the club will continue to race on Friday and Saturday.
